We came to Üzümlü Kalkan from Bolu in 2011, with a dream to start new lives and a business in our dream home. Ramazan was chief accountant at a large poultry company and we had been married for one year before we decided to move. Debbie had come from living in Cambridgeshire in the UK where she was a trained cook and mental health recovery worker, so quite diverse backgrounds.
We had seen the land with a lovely old cottage on it and thought we could do something gorgeous with it and originally planned to extend and renovate it. Unfortunately it was not structurally sound nor recoverable, so sadly had to be demolished. An architect was employed and plans were drawn up to create a new home on the site. Initially a six bedroom house was planned but that quickly became nine bedroom property. A builder and workers were employed and it has took seventeen months to get to complete the build.
Our dream was to have a Bed & Breakfast business, as we are situated right on the Lycian way and walkers frequent the road that runs in front of the house. However, with 9 bedrooms, 8 of which are for guest use, we knew we could far more flexible in our approach and build a multi-faceted business model that would fit with the needs of a range of guest needs. We decided that renting out the entire villa to larger groups and families would also be a great way to share our dream with others while offering them a little more privacy than the bed & breakfast option. We are very lucky that we now have use of a small cottage next door to the villa for when the villa is rented out, which means the guests get the house to themselves, but we are on hand should they need any help, advice or just fancy a chat over a cup of tea.
Debbie’s background in catering and the addition of many traditional Turkish dishes to her repertoire presented further opportunity to offer bespoke catering options and so, Grapevine Catering was born. You can read more about it on its dedicated catering page, but whether you want to join us to eat here at Villa Cennet Bahçesi while enjoying the stunning view across to Patara beach and the Taurus Mountains, or prefer us to come and cater for you in your villa anywhere in the Kalkan area, Grapevine Catering is just for you.
What attracted us to the Üzümlü area? It was its situation, with spectacular views over to Patara and the fact it was right on the Lycian way. Ramazan had been brought up in a village and was familiar with the way of life. We loved it because you have the best of both worlds, peace and quiet in the countryside and yet only a short drive down to the holiday resort of Kalkan, where we first met. We both think it is a great place for a holiday because it is a quiet area in a beautiful setting, with gardens and friendly people, taking in the Turkish way of life. It has much to offer in the way of historical sites to visit, is a great walking area and has a variety of activities such as visiting Saklikent Gorge, boat trips, horse riding and jeep safaris to name but a few, all of which can be organised for you, and guests picked up locally.
